In this Damage, Inc. guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this killer track off of Metallica's Master Of Puppets album note-for-note.
The tuning is standard tuning.
The opening of the song consists of the great Cliff Burton doing a multiple bass guitar arrangement based off of J.S. Bach's "Come Sweet Death". He uses a lot of reverse volume swells (or ran the tape backwards) and plays the notes individually, which allows for all of the slides that he does.
For my arrangement, I obviously can't recreate all of those slides note-for-note in a one guitar arrangement meant to contain all of the harmony notes. But, I think it sounds pretty cool what I have come up with and if you are playing in a Metallica tribute band or something, the audience will definitely recognize it.
From there the full band and enters and they launch into some crazy fast riffs. The riffs are very challenging and move around the fretboard quite a bit. I will cover each riff in the order that they appear in the original recording, including the rhythm guitar parts under Kirk Hammett's guitar solo.
Speaking of that solo, it is pure classic Kirk Hammett.
Kirk starts with some of his signature licks before launching into a very challenging series of repeated melodic figures that involve rolling the middle finger across the D and G strings. It is extremely awkward to get it up to full speed unless you can fully understand the pattern underneath it. It is probably easier to play in other positions on the guitar, but for authenticity, we are going to play it exactly like Kirk does!
From there you will find Kirk employ lots of unison bends, chromatic licks and tremolo picking. Don't forget that last tapping lick as well! I hope you guys have fun learning this monster! #damageincguitarlesson #metallica #guitarcovers
