Preview: India’s tour of South Africa began with three T20Is, with the series ending at 1-1 after the opener at Kingsmead, Durban was washed out due to incessant rain. India then won the ODI series 2-1 - a stupendous result considering they weren’t at full strength. The action now shifts to a two-match Test series, starting Tuesday (December 26) in Centurion. The second and final Test will be played at Newlands, Cape Town from January 3-7, 2024. It’s pertinent to mention that this is South Africa's first assignment in the ICC World Test Championship (2023-2025) cycle. India, on the other hand, had opened their campaign against West Indies earlier this year, winning the two-Test series 1-0.

Having finished as the runners-up twice in the competition, the BCCI selection committee made a few tough calls for the West Indies Tests. India had a new opener in Yashasvi Jaiswal, who impressed with a century on debut. Shubman Gill, who usually opens the batting, replaced Cheteshwar Pujara at No. 3, but the former couldn’t produce a utility knock. It’s still early days for both Jaiswal and Gill in their new roles, and they would have their task cut out on the traditional spicy South African wickets where bounce and seam movement make things difficult for the batters. The likes of skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer would have to take up the responsibility to get India through tricky phases across the two Tests.
