"How Repeated Fire Burns Triggered HumanDNA Evolution & Set Us Apart from Mammals &Primates"

science Fire didn't just change what humans could do, it
may have changed what humans are. A new paper in
*BioEssays* argues that living alongside controlled flame
for at least a million years created a through-line of
burns, and that those injuries were common enough to become an evolutionary pressure.
Burns are a special kind of threat because they punch
holes in the body's main barrier. Once skin is
compromised, bacteria get a fast lane into tissue, and
before antibiotics, even a "small" injury could spiral into a
lethal infection. The researchers suggest natural selection would have favored people whose bodies sealed wounds faster and mounted stronger early immune defenses after frequent, survivable burns. To test the idea, the team compared genomic data
across primates, focusing on pathways tied to wound closure, inflammation control, and immune response. They point to a set of burn responsive genes, including 94 genes activated during burn injury in mammals, and report that a subset shows signs of unusually rapid evolution in the human lineage. In the ZME Science
summary of the work, at least nine, and possibly up to 19, genes show signals of positive selection, with examples like SERTM1, ISG15, and CDC6 linked to how tissues
repair and how infections are fought off.
From an evolutionary standpoint, natural selection
optimizes for what happens most often, not the worst day of your life. A system tuned for small, repeated burns can become dangerous in severe injuries, where
aggressive inflammation can drive extreme scarring, systemic inflammatory responses, and organ failure.
The bigger implication is almost philosophical: culture, a behavior humans invented and maintained, may have acted like an environmental force, reshaping biology in return.
