*BioEssays* argues that living alongside controlled flame
for at least a million years created a through-line of
burns, and that those injuries were common enough to become an evolutionary pressure.
Burns are a special kind of threat because they punch
holes in the body's main barrier. Once skin is
compromised, bacteria get a fast lane into tissue, and
before antibiotics, even a "small" injury could spiral into a
lethal infection. The researchers suggest natural selection would have favored people whose bodies sealed wounds faster and mounted stronger early immune defenses after frequent, survivable burns.To test the idea, the team compared genomic data
across primates, focusing on pathways tied to wound closure, inflammation control, and immune response.They point to a set of burn responsive genes, including 94 genes activated during burn injury in mammals, and report that a subset shows signs of unusually rapid evolution in the human lineage.
