Visiting Hogwarts in the Snow | North Wash Utah

Hogwarts Canyon is always a fun one to knock out, and has proven to be a great choice to hit when weather conditions might not be so cooperative. We hit this canyon this year during the Presidents Day weekend in February and were not surprised that there was snow on the ground. Luckily North Wash doesn't generally hold a lot of snow, but when it does, it will accumulate in the shadows and what better place to find a shadow than in a slot canyon.

Hogwarts is a Technical Slot Canyoneering Route that requires ropes. It does however not require a lot of technical stemming and foot work which is good when there is snow and ice on the ground. Everything in the canyon was wet, but with some forethought and planning and understanding of this Slot Canyon, the water was mostly avoidable which is one reason we chose this canyon.

The worst part of the snow and ice was on the hike in. There was standing snow and melting ice and water on the slick rock that made this approach much more dangerous than usual. All in all, it was a fun day and a fun canyon as usual, the snow and ice made it a challenge, but nothing that our crew can't overcome.
