W24 Calbourne visits the Mid-Hants Railway - 12/05/12

A very rare visitor came to the Mid-Hants Railway this weekend in the shape of LSWR O2 Class 0-4-4T no.W24 'Calbourne' visiting the mainland from the Isle Of Wight Steam Railway, the first time she has been to the mainland since the mid 1920s. So far on her trip she has visited the Bodmin & Wenford Railway and the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre and she has now come to the Mid-Hants Railway were she was to work shuttles from Alresford to Ropley and back in between the lines normal service worked by Black 5 no.45379 & 850 'Lord Nelson'. Because she can only work with air-braked stock she worked with the line's DEMU 'Hampshire Unit'. One thing I found rather odd was the loads for 850 & 45379 with 850 on three coaches and 45379 on six, really it should have been the other way around I say.

- 45379 runs under Boyneswood Road Bridge on the approach to Medstead & Four Marks Station with the 15:55 from Alton. Then seen again on the same train, this time with 33053 on the back at Northside Lane, wasn't expecting to get this shot!
- W24 Calbourne is seen powering up the bank at Northside Lane on her last trip of the day, the 16:30 from Alresford.
- 45379 runs back light to Ropley past Northside Lane Crossing, didn't have time to set up properly so just stuck to tripod legs on the ground and held it.
- DEMU no.1125 takes the 16:50 from Ropley back to Alresford, this saves the railway doing a loco move with Calbourne.
- A few general shed scenes at Ropley then 33053 is seen moving off the stock to her siding whilst 45379 moves of to get ready for the 'Real Ale Train'.
- 45379 is then seen departing Ropley at 18:15 with the 'Real Ale Train'.
