The wonderful world of insects contains some of the most bizarre-looking creatures in existence
and caterpillars are not an exception. Some people still don’t know what a caterpillar is so we
will clear it. If the caterpillar, also called larva, is lucky, it turns into a butterfly, otherwise an
ugly moth. Caterpillars are commonly found feeding on leaves. They often have been called
“eating machines,” and grow very quickly. If you think all caterpillars look alike, then you have
been looking at the same type all your life. there are many fascinating types of caterpillars. One
of them is so rare that most people have not seen it in real life. So, let’s look at this strangest
caterpillar you have ever seen.
Number 10) MONKEY SLUG' CATERPILLAR
Judging by those furry, curly projections and flattened body, you'd be forgiven for mistaking this
caterpillar for a weird hairy spider. Also known as a 'monkey slug', the larva of the hag moth can
lose one of its shaggy 'appendages' without any ill effects. Sometimes mistaken for a hairy
spider, sometimes for moldy leaf litter, these larvae have six hairy "arms" that curl out from each
side of its body. It has extremely shortened legs, and the prolegs are suction cups, which create
the appearance of a slug when you look at it belly-side up. its tiny legs and oddly long "arms"
make it weirdly mesmerizing to watch. It does look like a creature that should be avoided at all
cost but according to recent studies, the monkey slug caterpillar is relatively harmless. the

Number 9.) PIPEVINE SWALLOWTAIL CATERPILLAR

the larva of the pipevine swallowtail may not be the most fetching or friendly-looking caterpillar
around. With its orange-red warts and fleshy filaments, it does look like something out of aliens
vs predators movie. It also stands out thanks to a distinctive diet, the caterpillars feed exclusively
on pipelines, which are toxic to most other animals. The ingested toxins are retained and act as a
deterrent to predators. When a predator attacks the caterpillar, the caterpillar secretes a
distasteful liquid from its pores. Luckily, the caterpillar has tough skin and can usually withstand
a predator long enough to secrete the liquid and deter the predator. The caterpillar transforms
into a real looker. The whole process of metamorphosis, which is the transformation from egg to
larva to pupa to adult, takes about 33 days. The pipevine swallowtail butterfly is a relatively
small black swallowtail with gorgeous, iridescent blue scaling. It measures approximately 7–10
cm. But don’t let the beauty distract you from the fact that they are extremely toxic and filled
with poison. So, if you ever find them in your yard, try not to eat them.
Number 8.) HUBBARD'S SILK MOTH CATERPILLAR
The Hubbard's silk moth, also known as Syssphinx hubbardi, might not be much to look at, but
the larval form of this North American species is nothing short of stunning. With a spine-lined
body sporting a brilliant green finish, these caterpillars certainly won't go unnoticed, especially if
you have a UV light to bring out their fluorescent glow. Yes, they glow in the dark. The young
caterpillars can be found clinging to the underside of petioles where they feed on leaf bases,
while the older larvae have developed a different technique: they prefer to cut through the stalks
and bend the leaves down to get at the fleshy rewards. Even though they are green in color, their
moth forms are much darker in color, especially males. Adults emerge at dusk and mate later that
night. The following evening the female lays her eggs and the cycle goes on like that.
Number 7.) CECROPIA MOTH CATERPILLAR

This strange-looking caterpillar eventually transforms into North America's largest native moth,
the cecropia moth. This caterpillar looks like he is shy someone might take a picture of him.
Maybe even caterpillars get insecurities. Despite that spiky amour, the caterpillars are actually
very vulnerable to parasitic wasps and flies, which lay their eggs on them or inside them. ones
that survive the vicious wasps turn into moths. Like other members of the giant silk moth family,
the cecropia moth lacks functional mouthparts and a digestive system. Due to this, they survive
for approximately two weeks. When the eggs hatch, the emerging larvae survive by feasting on
the organs and muscles of the caterpillar. Adults Upon reaching adulthood, their size is variable.
