Building a Hedgehog House - giving nature a helping hand

Hedgehogs need a sheltered space, both for their winter hibernation and for sheltering during the daytime. There aren't many such places in our well-kept gardens so I try to give the cute little fellows a helping hand by making a house for them.

Such a house can be built in many shapes but it is important to note that the entry has to form a sort of tunnel. This helps to keep the flies away when the hedgehog sleeps during the day.

This is very important because hedgehogs have difficulty cleaning themselves, so if they get infected with maggots, they suffer terribly.

And please remember: Never feed milk to hedgehogs, they can't tolerate it. Fruit, nuts or catfood is a much better choice - especially if you provide a low bowl of fresh water as well.

If you want to build a similar house, the minimum inside dimensions should be 30 by 50 centimeters by at least 20 centimeters in height (12 by 20 inches by at least 8 in height) and the entry "tunnel" needs to be at least 15 cm wide by 10 cm tall (inside measurements) and at least 20 cm long (6 by 4 inches and 8 long).
The hedgehog house can be built "flat" (no slope to the roof and no slats or blocks underneath) but it will probably last a season or two more, if built as I did it.

Another way to help the wildlife in our gardens, is to build a feeder for them: https://youtu.be/8Hn-ZKOkgNQ
