A knife filing bevel jig is an inexpensive, safe and accurate way of creating great and beautiful bevels on your knives. You can make an easy knife filing jig quite easily at home with simple tools you can find around the shop at almost no cost. It's a great DIY tool for any beginner knife maker.

The filing jig I am making in this video cost $15 and all of the materials are available at any hardware store (see the materials I used below). I'm showing few different methods on how to make an adjustable filing bevel jig but even a very simple one such as screwing an eye-bolt directly into the woodworks just fine. Since the file is not firmly mounted to the jig it lets you easily switch for another one and continue working.

HOW TO MAKE A FILING JIG FOR KNIVES | EASY KNIFE FILING JIG

I started out by measuring and cutting up the plywood. Then I sanded all the surfaces and edges of all the pieces using sandpaper (120 grit). After that, I glued all the pieces together using SOUDAL wood glue. Once glued I drilled some holes in and used 3,5x3 cm wood screws to strengthen the bevel jig. I drew a central line on the main piece where the eye bolts will be installed and divided it up at 2,5-3 cm intervals. I marked the other piece with few guiding lines where the catch for the knife will be installed as well as the stop for the file.
I tested and tried several simple ways how to set up an adjustable eye bolt.
1) Drilled a hole in and used a bolt to form a thread where the eye bolt fits
2) Drilled a hole in, put a nut in, and used a washer and a nut to fix the eye bolt
3) RECOMMENDED - drilled multiple holes in, put a threaded insert and a blind rivet nut in and then fixed the eye bolt to the knife filing jig with a washer and a nut. If mounted on a vise you can tighten it up from the bottom with another nut and a washer. This setup easily lets you switch the eye bolt between several inserts to achieve the best bevel on the knife.

To mount the file on the rod I used tape and hose clamps. The length of the rod should be around twice the length of the file.

MATERIAL USED:
- Plywood (36x10x2 cm), (26x10x2 cm), (39x10x2 cm), 2x (14,5x10x2 cm)
- Soudal wood glue
- Wood screws - 3,5x3
- Double cut bastard file - 20 cm
- Steel rod - 50 cm
- Electrical tape
- Screw type hose clamps
- Threaded insert, Blind rivet nut
- Metric eye bolt (6,8 diameter - multiple different lengths)
- Metric screws (6 diameter)
