Till It Shines

"Till It Shines" was written by Bob Seger and is the fourth track off of his 1978 release...Stranger in Town. The LP was his tenth studio album and his second with the Silver Bullet Band. Stranger in Town became an instant success in the United States (peaking at No. 4) and was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America less than a month after the album's release. Like its predecessor Night Moves, it would later go 6X Platinum and was also his first album to chart in the UK where it was stopped at No. 31. The album cover was shot on the lawn of the house Seger rented while recording the album in Los Angeles. The rented house was in the Hollywood Hills and helped provide the inspiration for his classic..."Hollywood Nights".

Seger wrote "Till It Shines" while on vacation in Barbados. According to him,he was bored after five days and decided to write the song. Presumably, that explains the line..."I've been too long on these islands". The songs most likely meaning, about starting life over, is found in the song's famous line..."Deal me up another future from some brand new deck of cards". It's a celebrated Seger line, not to mention a classic rock and roll projection to the possibility of a new beginning. There's gotta be a thousand examples in music that state the desire to start over, to chuck it all, and begin a new life "from some brand new deck of cards" with a popular one being from Bruce Springsteen's Hungry Heart (took a wrong turn and I just kept going). However, if you listen to the song a little more carefully, I'm not sure I agree with myself. And the reason why is the narrative is obviously addressed to a lover or potential lover..."Take away my inhibitions,Take away my solitude,Fire me up with your resistance,Put me in the mood" as well as "Storm the walls around this prison,Leave the inmates free the guards,Deal me up another future from some brand new deck of cards". When I think of those lines addressed to a woman, the meaning of the new future seems different. He seems to be talking about the spiritual change a woman can bring rather than about abandoning his past. One question that has never been answered is who is the "rich man lost and lonely" testing all the wines? Any way you analyze it, it's a great example of a provocative lyric wrapped in music so polished, you really don't notice the how pointed some of the lines are. Stranger in Town was second only to The Rolling Stones Some Girls for most national FM airplay in 1978. The title refers to being a stranger to all of this...success, fame, and money...being a stranger to the community of success.Seger dropped the title cut because Billy Joel's "The Stranger" had recently been released. Reportedly, he thought people might see "Stranger in Town" as derivative of "The Stranger". "Stranger in Town" is also the title of an old Del Shannon hit.
