Emirates aircraft hit and killed around 40 flamingos just before landing in Mumbai

Around 40 flamingos died after being struck by an Emirates aircraft in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar. The Boeing 777-300ER aircraft (EK-508) hit the flock just before landing at the Mumbai airport. The area was found littered with bird carcasses, with broken pieces of wings, claws and beaks scattered all over.

An Emirates spokesperson said its flight from Dubai to Mumbai was "involved in a bird strike upon landing".

"The aircraft landed safely and all passengers and crew disembarked without injury. However, sadly, a number of flamingos were lost and Emirates is cooperating with the authorities on the matter," the spokesperson said.

Flocks of flamingos migrate to Mumbai's wetlands around November every year and stay for a few months.
