How to Make Giant Peg Board

We were asked to make three peg boards with giant sized holes.
Apparently, this is sort of a stylish thing right now. You see it being using a lot in children's rooms sometimes in kitchens.

We used one sheet of 3/4" maple plywood and 1" dowels. I looked around for the nicest 1” dowels I could find. There is a difference when you purchase dowels. Sometimes the tolerance on cheap doweling is not real accurate. Find hardwood or birch dowels if you can.

I used a brand new 1" forstner bit for drilling all those holes. Absolutely no tear out on either side. You’ve got to have a nice sharp bit.
The drilling guide I used I purchased on Amazon for less than $40. It was a cheap one but it did the job. We took a scratch awl and punched a small starter hole for the drill bit at the intersection of all my marks. It was a lot easier to accurately position the drill that way.

Before we installed these boards we sanded them with 120 grit sandpaper and rolled on some water based polyurethane…at least two coats. We actually just screwed them to the walls but whatever you do make sure its good and sturdy because it will be pretty heavy.
We made some small custom shelfs for a few of the items that were to be displayed out of ¾ inch plywood and added a 1 3/4 inch edge.

Pretty simple little project and I think it turned out great.
Use a sharp bit, get a drilling guide and lay out the holes carefully and drill them nice and straight.
