This Tree Becomes More Valuable When It’s Injured

This tree has to suffer to become worth more than gold.
Deep in Southeast Asia, the Agarwood (Aquilaria) tree produces one of the most valuable substances on Earth — but only when it’s wounded.
When the tree is cut or infected, it defends itself by creating a dark, aromatic resin. Over time, this resin turns into agarwood, a rare material used in perfumes, incense, and luxury oils.
The rarer it becomes, the more valuable it gets — sometimes even worth more than gold.
But this value comes at a cost. Overharvesting has pushed these trees toward extinction in the wild.
Nature’s most valuable creations often come from pain.
