After Weight Loss Surgery - Hydration and Medication

I am Julie Eggli. I am a Registered nurse and Bariatric coordinator for Cottage Health.

I would like to take this opportunity to briefly touch on 2 topics that will be of importance to you, as you continue on your weight loss journey.

The 2 Topics are adequate hydration and medication administration

It is important for you to keep yourself well hydrated by drinking enough water, and other liquids and sufficient protein (listed on your nutritional program), to avoid becoming dehydrated. The following are some signs and symptoms of dehydration, for you to be aware of:

⁃ fatigue
⁃ dizziness
⁃ dry mouth
⁃ headache
⁃ infrequent urination
⁃ dark and strong smelling urine
⁃ nausea
⁃ muscle aches

If you experience any of these symptoms you need to try to get more water. Try sugar free popsicles or putting cucumber in your water. Any fruit will work and can make it go down easier. Remember to just sip slowly. You can’t drink normally for a few more weeks.

Medications:

Let’s talk about medications. After your surgery, you will be receiving various vitamins and mineral supplements to augment your nutritional plan.

Medications in pill form will need to be smaller than a baby aspirin. If your pills are larger than this you should crush them or break them into smaller pieces. You will also receive some of your medications in liquid form or medications that can be chewed. If you are taking any sustained released medication, that cannot be crushed, consult with your physician. While you are in the hospital, you will receive pain medication by mouth in liquid form, or through your Intravenous Line.

Constipation:

And lastly, it is important to not get constipated. The diet you are on has very little fiber in it and if you are taking the pain medicine you will get constipated and it is very unpleasant.

You must take sugar-free fiber in some form.

You need to take sugar free fiber in some form. There are many different options at the drug store find the kind you can get down most easily.

Congratulations on taking this huge step to improve your health and quality of life.

Please consult with your nurse or physician if you have any questions.
