How To Setup An Acoustic Guitar and Reduce String Height with Lindo Guitars

High action and a bowed neck are pretty common in guitar world, so within a couple of minutes we show you the basics of setting up your acoustic guitar to get it playing as well as possible. The steps in the video are as follows:

1. Tools
2. Tune guitar to pitch
3. Measure low E string height at the 12th fret. High action is anything over 3mm.
4. Check the neck relief (bow in the neck). Place a finger or capo at fret 1 on the low E string. Place another finger at fret 14 on the same low E string.
5. Check height of string at fret 7. Ideally you should be able to slide a business card in between the string and 7th fret.
6. If the gap is greater than this, there is likely too much bow in the neck.
7. Time to adjust the truss rod.
8. Turn the truss rod left/anti-clockwise for more bow (concave) and right/clockwise for back bow (convex). Only turn the truss rod a quarter turn at a time. Never overtighten the truss rod as you can damage the neck of the guitar.
9. Because the action is high on this guitar, we need to adjust the truss rod clockwise.
10. After adjusting, check the neck relief again at fret 7. It should measure approximately 0.5mm.
11. Because the strings are still too high from the fretboard, we now need to adjust the saddle.
12. Measure the height of the low E string at fret 12.
13. The action is now at 4mm which is still too high for comfortable playing.
14. Measure the height of the saddle from the top of the bridge. Your saddle may be higher or lower than ours, so just keep that in mind when calculating your action.
15. This particular saddle measures at 6mm.
16. As we want to lower the string height at the 12th fret by around 1mm, we need to remove 2mm of material from the saddle. This should then achieve a string height of 3mm.
17. Loosen strings and remove the bridge saddle carefully.
18. Measure and mark 2mm from the underside of the saddle and mark with a pencil line.
19. Now sand off the excess material. Ensure you do this on a flat surface as it is vital the underneath of the saddle is not uneven.
20. Replace saddle.
21. Tune guitar back up to pitch and check the saddle height.
22. Now check your string height at the 12th fret. It should now measure 3mm.
If you want the strings lower than this, you will likely encounter fret buzz so just be careful how much you take off the nut.
