Combining technology and art to celebrate Indigenous stories | Yolonde Entsch | TEDxBrisbane
Social Entrepreneur, Yolonde Entsch was one of the first non-essential workers to visit the remote Indigenous community of Doomadgee in the Australian Outback after the highly restrictive COVID-19 biosecurity borders were lifted, along with her colleague, pottery artist Felicity Bury.
They discovered the place was like a ghost town. Many had left, and many of those that remained were so scared of COVID they would not leave their homes. Looking to help reignite community interaction and increase the appearance of public art, they established a free COVID-safe pottery class for members of the community, where pottery goannas were crafted and displayed in town.
The introduction of QR codes to each piece of ceramic artwork provides the opportunity for people to scan and discover who made it and the story behind it. This embracing of technology represents one vehicle for elders and artists alike to leave their story behind for future generations to learn. With a career spanning community, political, government and more recently entrepreneurial endeavours, Yolonde’s focus is on empowering women to engage and act.
One of her most recent endeavours is a community project which transformed pottery classes in a remote Indigenous community into a community project where pottery goannas were crafted and displayed in town. The introduction of QR codes to each piece of ceramic artwork provides the opportunity for people to scan and discover who made it and the story behind it. This embracing of technology represents one vehicle for elders and artists alike to leave their story behind for future generations to learn. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
