In this video I reveal a NEW and extremely important fact: Bleach can be used to "de-colorize" treated Andamooka matrix opal. I show to remove color and MORE IMPORTANTLY -- HOW TO DETECT "untreated" matrix opal from treated BLEACHED matrix opal. I show how color removal has been used by sellers to sell PREVIOUSLY TREATED matrix as UNTREATED!
The “secret” technique for removing treatment effect of Andamooka matrix opal is revealed: chlorine bleach! This technique works very well when the bleach is heated, but I also how it is easy to remove too much treatment effect, if the temperature is too high. Bleach will remain in the decolorized matrix and needs to be removed, or subsequent treatment will not work well. Bleach treatment can be neutralized by using chemicals, such as sodium metabisulfite or ascorbic acid (Vitamin C).
I show HOW TO SPOT PREVIOUSLY TREATED Andamooka matrix opal! DARK SPOTS on "untreated" matrix indicate that it HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY BLEACHED. I give evidence that the bleaching technique has probably been used for many years, but is not generally known.
