France-Australia relationship at low point after AUKUS announcement

Australia's relationship with France has reached a low point as France withdraws its ambassador to Australia amid the announcement of AUKUS.

The French foreign minister argued the decision is justified by the gravity of the announcement made on September 15.

France claims it was blindsided by the birth of the AUKUS alliance, which saw the Morrison government cancel the $90 billion submarine deal with France.

Foreign Minister Marise Payne says she understands France's deep disappointment.
