With the 6-color Epson SurePress L-6534VW, it requires only one clear ink to create superb matt and dull varnish effects. Simulated metallic foils of any color, including gold foil, can be produced by using white ink and digital varnish together on a metallic substrate, as is tactile raised embossing. These multiple finishes are controlled by digital artwork just like any spot colors in a digital workflow.

What is digital varnish?

Digital varnish creates high-impact varnish and metal foil effects to highlight the most important parts of any label, including logos and brand names. With no plates or analog stations to set up, the run length for digital varnish jobs can be as small as a single label.

While analog systems work well for flood coats, where minimal setup is required, spot effects are much more easily produced with the Epson digital system.

Why is digital varnish relevant to your business?

All sorts of product categories are embracing digital varnish, from the stylish art and craft brewing to the bold labels in nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and the growing cannabis market.

We all know the label is the first interaction a consumer has with a product, and your clients want exciting, eye-catching labels for their products.

Still, traditional spot varnish printing has been too pricey for many in mainstream industries such as health and beauty, car care and electronics. But now you can help any client make their products jump off the shelf, with a process that requires no extra setup and at a cost that’s the same as other inks.

How does digital varnish work on the production floor?

The real magic of this process is that we do not need a gloss and matt ink to produce contrasting finishes, but can create a smooth glossy surface and rough matte by precisely controlling the ink droplets. The only extra preparation is one spot color layer in the digital artwork to place the gloss finish. The press computer will automatically add matte finish to the remaining areas of the label, quickly and easily creating contrasting finishes.

To use digital varnish as a simulated metallic foil, simply add gloss varnish to a metallic substrate in an area where no white ink is placed. To create a bright gold foil look, print digital varnish over yellow ink. You can easily create bronze, silver, gold foil or any other metallic color.

In the video, we’ll show you the layers you’ll create in your artwork to produce standard printing and metal foil effects on the metallic substrate.

Tactile effects such as embossing can also be produced, even Braille and high relief embossing printing over the same area of substrate multiple times, which the press can do automatically.

All of this extra capability comes very easily. The press auto-maintains all print heads including digital varnish during the entire production day. Manual maintenance is only required once per day, regardless of the number of production hours.
