X Ray Pneumonia

Spotting Pneumonia on Chest X-rays! 💡

Fellow clinicians, a quick refresher on interpreting chest X-rays for pneumonia!

When pneumonia strikes, the tiny air-filled alveoli get packed with inflammatory exudates – pus and bacteria. This transforms their appearance on an X-ray.

✅ Consolidation: What was once air (appearing black) becomes dense and solid (appearing white). So, look for that distinct white patch! ✅ Air Bronchogram: The definitive clue! Within that white consolidated area, you'll often see black, branching lines. These are the small airways (bronchi) that remain air-filled, now clearly visible against the surrounding dense lung tissue.

Finding these air bronchograms within a white patch is a strong indicator, helping confirm your pneumonia diagnosis quickly.
