The carnal mind is often at odds with God's law, not due to inability, but a choice to embrace fleshly desires. Righteousness isn't inherently 'filthy rags'; that applies to hypocritical religiosity, not genuine obedience. While personal righteousness doesn't atone for sin, it's not the source of damnation. Sin is. Deeds are only 'filthy rags' when mixed with hypocrisy.
