Giant Tube Worm: Mouthless Giant of Underwater Volcanoe! #sea #animals #nature #earth #facts #water

Riftia pachyptila is a marine invertebrate in the phylum annelida — the group of segmented worms that also includes common shallow-water polychaete tube worms found in coral reefs and coastal marine environments.
Unlike its shallow-water relatives, however, this species evolved to survive in one of the most extreme habitats on earth.

They lives in the deep pacific ocean, found at depths up to 3,600 meters. Inhabits hydrothermal vents releasing superheated water, surrounding vent fluids can reach 350–380°c. Worms occupy a survivable “sweet spot” around 54°c.

They were first discovered in 1977 near the galápagos rift by scientists using the deep-sea submersible dsv alvin.
Their discovery revolutionized biology by proving life can exist without sunlight.

These worms grow up to 3 meters (10 feet) long and tube diameter around 4 cm (1.6 inches), live inside tough protective chitin tubes.

At the top is a striking red plume that contains specialized hemoglobin, absorbs oxygen and hydrogen sulfide and supplies these chemicals to internal bacteria.

The red color comes from iron-rich hemoglobin — similar to human blood, but adapted to bind toxic sulfide safely.

Did you know these giant tube worms have no mouth, no stomach and no intestines.
Instead, they rely on chemosynthetic bacteria living inside a special organ called the trophosome.

Let’s see how the symbiosis works. Bacteria use hydrogen sulfide from vent water, convert it into organic molecules and feed the worm through chemosynthesis. This allows the worm to thrive in total darkness, independent of sunlight.

The giant tube worms are among the fastest-growing marine invertebrates and they can grow up to 1.5 meters in under two years.
