Chinese dadao is a traditional percussion instrument with a long history. Archaeological findings have confirmed that as early as the Longshan Culture period (about 3,000 to 4,000 years ago), China had pottery or wooden drums. Its typical structure is a wooden cavity covered with animal skins such as cowhide, and it produces sound by being struck with a drumstick, with a powerful and deep tone.
In Chinese culture, the large drum has an extremely wide range of applications, spanning military affairs, rituals, religion and daily life. It was once an instrument used to command troops on the battlefield and to display the ceremonial processions in the court; it was also frequently used in temples to gather the congregation, to announce the time (also known as the "morning warning drum"), as well as in folk rituals, festivals and wedding and funeral ceremonies.
