Prior to the death of guitarist Eddie Van Halen,it was widely reported in the press that the guitarist was quietly battling cancer once again. Eddie had been out of the spotlight for the past several years with his last notable appearance happening in 2015 when the band did their last tour Frontman David Lee Roth raised some eyebrows when he was promoting his upcoming Las Vegas residency last year when he bluntly admitted that Van Halen was done. The band’s history in the past decade and a half was full of stop and starts and today we’ll take a look at the last 15 years.

I had previously done a pretty in-depth video of Van Halen’s ill-fated reunion tour with Sammy Hagar in 2004. The link is down below if you guys want to check it out. Following the ill-fated tour Hagar returned to his project the Waboritas and bassist Michael Anthony joined him. By 2006 Michael Anthony was out of Van Halen and accounts over why he was fired vary. Some think it stems from the fact that Anthony remained friends Hagar after the ill-fated reunion tour. Anthony would reveal he learned of his dismissal after reading an article online where Eddie announced his teenage son Wolfgang was the band’s new bass player. Anthony also pointed out that another source of tension could have been the Hagar's commercial ventures such as the Cabo Wabo product line, Anthony's hot sauce brand.Anthony would also pointedto business people and lawyers who divided the members against each other. “Unfortunately when you get a band, and all of the big bands will tell you the same thing, it turns into a big corporate thing after awhile. Then the next thing you know, each guy has got his own manager, his own chef, his own this and that. Then when everybody has their own lawyer, that’s when the fun really starts happening.

Anthony’s role role in the band appeared to diminish as far back as when 1984 was released as he was apparently forced to sign away his royalties and it was rumored he was out of the group by the late 90’s, but it would prove not to be true. For the band’s reunion tour in 2004 with Hagar, Anthony wasn’t even supposed to be part of the trek, but Hagar insisted he be involved. Anthony joined the band but took a significant pay cut.

BY 2006 Anthony learned he was out of the band after the band announced that Eddie’s son Wolfgang was the band’s new bass player.
It was announced the following year that Van Halen was reuniting with singer David Lee Roth for a 25 date north america tour. As the band hit the road they were met with positive reviews but the tour would be interrupted as rumors swirled of eddie van halen re-entering rehab after a backstage bust up with his son wolfgang. It was something the van halen camp denied at the time and the tour resumed in 2008. The tour was a massive success and was the most commercially successful tour the band had done in their career grossing almost 100 million dollars. In 2007 Van Halen was also inducted into the rock n’ roll hall of fame and none of the members of the current lineup at the time showed up. Eddie was said to be in rehab while Alex and Dave declined to show up. The band would be inducted by Velvet Revolver and the only inductees to show up would be Michael and Sammy. It would be one of the messiest rock n’ roll hall of fame inductions, something I’ll cover in a future story.

At the band’s last show as part of the 2008 reunion tour with Roth the frontman would claim this trek wouldn’t be the band’s last set of shows. Following the tour Eddie would hint that the band was working on new music, but his son Wolfgang first needed to graduate from high school and the guitarist needed to get surgery for his hand as he was suffering from artheritis. By 2012 Van Halen fans were rewarded with their first full length album of new material in 14 years with a Different Kind of Truth. It was the first studio album to feature bassist Wolfgang and the first album of new completely material in 28 years to feature David Lee Roth. The group’s last full length studio record of original material was 1998’s widely panned Van Halen 3 album which featured singer Gary Cherone.
