"Sube la Marea: El Sitio de Cartagena (1815)" by Compañía de Teatro Reculá del Ovejo.

Since 1533 until the wars of independence, Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) had been under Spanish rule for more than 275 years. On 11 November 1811, a Declaration of Independence was signed proclaiming "a free state, sovereign and independent of all domination and servitude to any power on Earth". The support for a declaration of independence by working class leader and artisan Pedro Romero was crucial.

Years leater, Spain's reaction to retake its power on the city was to send a "pacifying expedition" under the command of Pablo Morillo, The Pacifier, and Pascual de Enrile, which included 59 ships, and 10,612 men. In August 1815, the city was placed under siege and, for 105 days was defended by 3000 men, 360 cannons, and 8 ships plus ancillary small watercraft. As in other sieges during the Spanish-American Wars of Independence, the population suffered the epidemic effects of hunger and disease, and by 6th of December, when Spanish troops entered the city, about 6000 had died while 2000 others fled.

After taking the city, Morillo, in retaliation, shot nine of the rebel leaders on 24 February 1816, at what is now known as the Camellón de los Mártires. This is where this footage was taken.

"Sube la Marea: Resistencia Histórica, El Sitio de Cartagena" ("The tide is rising: The siege of Cartagena" by Compañía de Teatro Reculá del Ovejo is a dramatized interpretation of the historical events that took place that December of 1815.

"... In the evening of December 6, the evacuation began in admirable silence and order. The scene could not be more pathetic or inspire deeper feelings of pain ... Morillo and his acolytes suspended for a few days their insane cruelty on the inhabitants of Cartagena. Corpses in the houses and in the streets, dying men and women, walking skeletons, that was the population they found in Cartagena."
