The stereotypes that Africans live in hurts, trees and on roof tops is now a myth of the past as recent exposure of the African continent to the world has shown most people in the developed world that some of them cannot even afford living in some of the cities in Africa. Even if you can find somewhere affordable in a city, some neighbourhoods are way off limits if you don’t have a heavy bank account to back it up. The compulsion to escape from the pressures of the modern world to imaginary utopias has long been a lucrative selling point for urban developers and is a true phenomenon in many cities in Africa. The rise in the number of millionaires has led to property boom as they search for their own little ‘utopias’. While you are dreaming big, some people are already living big just by the neighbourhoods they choose to live in.

20. Cocody ( Abidjan) - Ivory Coast
This is one of the neighbourhoods to live in for the jet set and elite of Ivory Coast; Cocody has been referred to as the ‘Beverly Hills of Abidjan’ for several reasons. As the home to the cultural elite, embassies, and expats of prominence, the area also offers some of the most spectacular views in the city and is surrounded by other areas that are currently vying to be the next neighbourhood of note in Abidjan. Cocody is beautiful and prestigious and you must have a happy Bank account to afford an apartment in the neighbourhood
19. Masaki ( Dar Es Salaam) - Tanzania
Masaki is one neighbourhood in Dar Es Salaam that has emerged as the place to relax in the arms of luxury, with most of the area’s inhabitants high ranking dignitaries and ambassadors from around the world. Those that live in the area are minutes away from international cuisine and a great nightlife that continues to attract more people of affluence to the neighbourhood every year. Securing an apartment is extremely difficult but if your bank account is fully loaded why Not.
18. East Legon, Ghana
East Legon is an area which screams affluent by its very look as it is occupied by sophisticated modern low-rise apartment blocks and detached houses. The population here is kept at minimal and the prices both for buying and renting an apartment are extremely high. It is also the safest neighbourhoods in Ghana. East Legon offers a serene environment with the villas so rounded by the lush green trees as well the perfect manicured side-walks. To own a home here will set you back $2 million on average which is why it is inhabited by footballers and Business tycoons.
17. La Marsa (Tunis) Tunisia
La Marsa is a coastal town in far north eastern Tunisia near the capital Tunis. La Marsa is a beachfront suburb known for its corniche, shopping, bars and cafes. It is home to a number of villas and apartments that are populated by families. The upscale suburb is approximately half-hours drive from the city. House prices here range from $756 to $1,563 per square metre for rent and buying a house is another story of huge financial cost.
16. Miramar (Luanda) -Angola
Luanda has already bagged the title of the most expensive city for expatriates in Africa but then Miramar takes up a notch with well-manicured lawns, palm trees, flowers benches and playgrounds which has become a sure magnet for the rich. Miramar is an exclusive area situated in one of the best neighbourhoods in Luanda, the old cinema. Its major attraction is the Alto das Cruzes cemetery located in the upper town, part of Miramar. It is the most famous cemetery in the city where great people were buried. It is popular with foreign diplomats and extremely wealthy Angolans.
15. Asokoro (Abuja)- Nigeria
Asokoro District is home to the Nigerian presidential complex, Nigerian National assembly, the Supreme Court and brags of the best roads and streets in Nigeria. To wake up to the view of the Aso Rock also found here and enjoy the exclusive haven of beauty, you will have to drop a hefty $ 2,612,500.
