Build a Rain Garden in One Weekend (5 Steps)

Every storm, clean water leaks off your yard and into the storm drain — carrying chemicals and sediment straight into local creeks. A rain garden filters up to 90% of those chemicals (per the EPA) and 80% of sediment, all in a basin you can build in a single weekend.

Five steps:
1. Site it — 10+ ft from the foundation, 35 ft from a septic field. Call 811.
2. Test the soil — dig 12", fill with water, drain rate greater than 0.25 in/hr.
3. Size it — 10–20% of the drainage area (roof/driveway feeding in).
4. Dig the basin — flat bottom, 4–6" deep. Pile soil into a downhill berm.
5. Plant deep-rooted natives. Mulch 3". Water through year one.
