Why Japan Couldn't Stop the B-29 Raids After Iwo Jima Fell

February 19th, 1945. Iwo Jima.

After 36 days of intense combat, the island was secured by United States Marine Corps at a cost of nearly 7,000 American dead and over 19,000 wounded. Its value was initially debated within Pacific command.

Then the first damaged Boeing B-29 Superfortress landed on its runway.

Before the capture, returning bombers from Japan had no emergency airfield between the Mariana Islands and the Japanese home islands. Many damaged aircraft risked ditching in the Pacific.

Afterward, Iwo Jima became an emergency landing base, fighter staging point, and radar station. More than 2,200 B-29 landings were recorded between March and August 1945, saving thousands of airmen and aircraft.

Under Curtis LeMay, the strategic bombing campaign intensified, with fighter escorts operating from the island.

Iwo Jima did not decide the war alone, but it significantly improved the survivability and effectiveness of the B-29 campaign against Japan.
