Aztec and Conquistadors: Is Everything You Thought You Knew About Them Wrong?

Matthew Restall
(Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of Latin American History and Anthropology Director of Latin American Studies, Pennsylvania State University)

Since 1995 he has published twenty books and over fifty articles and essays, focusing on three areas of research: colonial Mesoamerica, especially the colonial Maya; African in Spanish America; and the Spanish Conquest. Among other things he pioneered the field of what is called ‘New Conquest History.’ This interdisciplinary field combines those of history, anthropology, art history, and geography. It stresses the use newly found sources, such as those in indigenous languages and non-textual visual sources and seeks to re-interpret familiar ones. His approach is perhaps encapsulated by the title of his path-breaking book, Seven Myths of Spanish Conquest (2003) and subsequently in Invading Guatemala: Spanish, Nahua and Maya Accounts of the Conquest Wars (2007). He is general editor of the Cambridge Latin American History Monograph Series and of Ethnohistory. He is currently researching two books, one on Belize and another called ‘The Meeting’ on Cortes and Moctezuma. This lecture will provide a glimpse of this new research.
