Homemade offroad buggy with a 600cc sportbike engine part 1

In this first episode Fons and Maarten are starting their new project. They are building a off road buggy with a 600cc sportbike engine.

Building a four wheel race vehicle is a long time wish of us. We decided to go with an off road buggy first because it’s easier for us to find a dirt track than it is to get access to a race track.

Next we needed to decide where to start. First the frame or first the engine. What kind of tires, rims, suspension are we going to use. How are we going to make the steering work. We struggled for a while before Fons found a half finished off road buggy project on Facebook for just 100 euro.

The buggy we purchased has a 600 cc Yamaha FZR engine producing 90 hp. Because we planned to heavily modify the buggy frame we took the engine out with the idea to build it on a temporary frame. During this process we discovered that the engine was incomplete. Parts of the clutch were missing together with all kinds of cables and electrical wires. Buying all these parts would cost much more than we paid for the engine and the off road buggy without having the guarantee that the engine would work. We decided to proceed with another engine.

A couple days later we found the perfect motorcycle for the off road- buggy project. This time a Honda cbr 600 f2. This sportbike is even faster than the Yamaha producing 100 hp. With only 35.000 km the engine should be good for many more kilometers of off-road abuse. We stript the bike in a couple of hours and it is ready to be built in.
