Super BurgerTime (Arcade) Playthrough
Playthrough of Data East's 1990 platformer for the Arcades, Super BurgerTime.
Super Burger Time is an arcade platformer released by Data East in 1990 as a sequel to the original BurgerTime. While it retains the food-themed concept of assembling giant burgers by walking across ingredients, Super Burger Time expands on the formula with more dynamic level design, cooperative multiplayer, and a faster, more chaotic pace. Players once again step into the oversized chef shoes of Peter Pepper, now armed not just with his trusty pepper shaker but also with a frying pan and an increased arsenal of power-ups.
The game plays out across vertically stacked platforms, with players navigating ladders and ledges to walk over burger components like buns, patties, and lettuce, causing them to drop down level by level until they assemble into completed burgers at the bottom. Along the way, waves of enemy food items—including anthropomorphic eggs, sausages, and pickles—constantly chase and harass the player. The action is more intense than in the original, with more frequent enemy spawns and a greater variety of hazards.
Unlike the first game, Super Burger Time supports two-player simultaneous gameplay, allowing players to work together to build burgers and fend off enemies. The addition of the frying pan attack provides a more aggressive alternative to the traditional pepper spray, which temporarily stuns enemies. Power-ups hidden throughout the stages can enhance attacks, speed, or grant other bonuses, giving players a better chance to survive the escalating difficulty.
Visually, the game features more detailed sprite work and animations, with colorful backgrounds and whimsical character designs that reflect its playful tone. Each level has a distinct visual theme, and the bosses—oversized, often absurd food creatures—add variety and challenge to the gameplay. The music and sound effects are lighthearted and energetic, matching the game’s cheerful aesthetic and fast rhythm.
Super Burger Time may not have achieved the iconic status of its predecessor, but it offers a more action-oriented take on the classic formula. Its combination of cooperative play, creative level design, and cartoonish style makes it a memorable entry in the platformer genre and a hidden gem in the arcade library of the early '90s.
