Young cubs are prey to a variety of predators such as hyenas, jackals, leopards, pythons, and martial eagles. The mother protects her cubs by hiding them in the safest locations she can discover, scooping up each youngster in her mouth one by one to relocate them. She must hunt throughout this period to preserve her health and milk production, so the cubs will be left alone at times.
