Interview with gay priest fired by Vatican

(5 Nov 2015) A former Vatican official and priest, who was fired by the Holy See last month after coming out as gay, said he used very strong words in his letter to Pope Francis to denounce the Vatican for its attitude towards homosexual clergy.
At the same time, Krzysztof Charamsa praised the pontiff for his open-minded approach to the issue, and said he hoped that thanks to his move more priests would openly admit their sexuality and "destroy the code of silence" in the Catholic Church.
Charamsa came out in newspaper interviews in Italy and Poland, saying he was happy and proud to be a gay priest, and that he was in love with a man whom he identified as his boyfriend and with whom he now lives in Barcelona.
He also said the Vatican is far from what others consider it to be "when they see pontifical celebrations."
Charamsa told the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza that he was motivated to make his sexual orientation public by hate mail that he received after publicly criticizing a right-wing Polish priest, who is strongly anti-gay, in the Catholic weekly 'Tygodnik Powszechny'.
