Nagastra-1

In April 2023, it was reported that Indian Army has inducted the Nagastra-1 by Solar Industries which has been procured under the emergency procurement process. This is the first indigenously designed and developed loitering munition inducted by Indian Army.

The Nagastra 1 has more than 80% indigenous content and can carry 1.5kg warhead to a range of 15km. It has endurance of 60 minutes with accuracy of less than 2m. It can be launched with hand and ground based launcher.

Skystriker & Warmate

Earlier the army has inducted the 100 units of each Skystriker & Warmate LMs from Israel and Poland respectively.

Skystriker has range of 20 km, endurance of 2hrs and can carry warhead of 5kg. Polish Warmate has operational Radio Line-of-Sight (RLOS) range of 30 km with maximum payload of 5.7 kg. It can carry two types of warheads which are high explosive and thermobaric.

Swarm Drone by NewSpace Research

In September 2021, Indian Army has awarded Newspace Research and Technologies, Rs 1,200 crore worth contract, to supply 100 swarm drone units. These drones can carry out strikes against targets, at distances up to 25km with 5 to 10kg of explosives. The Indian Army has placed orders, for two 'swarms' of 50 drones each.

ALS 50 loitering munitions

The Indian Air Force is also boosting its LM arsenal with induction of first batch of Advanced Loitering System(ALS) 50 designed and developed by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL). IAF has planned to procure 100 LMs.

The LM has a length of 2.4m, wingspan of 3.8m and a maximum takeoff weight of 50 kg. It can take off like a quadcopter and transition into fixed wing mode during flight for long distance travel. It is capable of launching missions upto a distance of 50 km and can perform real time targeting, either by the operator or autonomously.

The LM has endurance of more than an hour. The LM can be launched from altitude of 400m from mean sea level. The UAV can carry a range of anti-personnel and anti-armour warheads weighing up to 6 kg including explosively formed penetrator (EFP) warhead. The accuracy of the system has been tested to be less than 2 meters, adequate to carry out precise strikes.
