From "Why a Duck?" to "Ace of Spades," these are the Marx Brothers' best bits in The Cocoanuts (1929), Animal Crackers (1930), Monkey Business (1931), and Horse Feathers (1932).
Peacock. THE COCOANUTS (1929):
The Cocoanuts, based on the stage show if the same name, was comedy legends The Marx Brothers’ first movie, but you would never know it from the sheer quantity and quality of the on-screen hijinks. Florida hotel manager Mr. Hammer (Groucho Marx) struggles to keep his establishment from going under. Hammer's only paying guest is Mrs. Potter (Margaret Dumont), whose daughter Polly (Mary Eaton) is in love with aspiring architect Bob (Oscar Shaw). Mrs. Potter would prefer that Polly marry the respectable Harvey Yates (Cyril Ring); what she doesn't know is that Yates is a jewel thief, in cahoots with the slinky Penelope (Kay Francis). Add Chico and Harpo to the mix and the only guarantee, besides hilarity, is that nothing will go as planned!
ANIMAL CRACKERS (1930):
Groucho Marx portrays celebrated African explorer Capt. Spaulding, who's just returned to the states to inflict comic carnage on the highfalutin party of society matron Mrs. Rittenhouse (Margaret Dumont), regaling guests with tales of his adventures in the wild ("I shot an elephant in my pajamas; how he got there I'll never know" and so on). Amidst the mayhem, the Marx Brothers also perform several memorable musical numbers.
MONKEY BUSINESS (1931):
Four stowaways get mixed up with gangsters and crewmen as they race from stateroom to stateroom aboard an ocean liner.
HORSE FEATHERS (1932):
The Marx Brothers are at their zany best in this gridiron tale of a newly-elected college president (Groucho) who must produce a winning football team in order to save his job. But when he inadvertently recruits the wrong guys (Chico and Harpo), total chaos ensues. Fast-paced, funny and outrageous parody of the wholesome college movies of its era.
