Judge on an iPad during labor?!

Twelve hours in…a nurse handed a woman in labor an iPad with a judge waiting for her. No advance notice. No attorney present for her.

The hospital was seeking a court order to perform a C-section she didn’t want.

The hospital believed they were “protecting her” by forcing a C-section but she believed she was protecting herself by avoiding it…and she shared her reasons why.

Cherise Doyley happened to be a birth doula herself and mother of three already. She stated that she knew the risk under 2% odds of uterine rupture and would consent in an emergency but chose to continue laboring naturally.

The state ultimately said no.

Here’s how this situation goes sideways. Foundational healthcare ethics dictate that competent adults have the right to refuse medical intervention.

*Except when you’re pregnant.

With women’s health it always comes back to who has control. And that answer - systemically - is rarely the woman herself.
