Lithuania's border with Russia. Kybartai railway station. Train to Kaunas

Kybartai railway station (or Virbali railway station). A large railway transport hub.
1851-1861 a branch of the St. Petersburg-Warsaw railway from Lentvaris to Virbalis was built. Virbali's high-class railway station was built a few kilometers away, right next to the state border with Germany - in present-day Kybarti. The Russian Empire had a unique railway station complex with apartments for the emperor and his entourage in Kybartai (Virbal at that time). French engineers designed a complex station complex: maintenance and technical service of locomotives, rolling stock, track, fuel, water supply, security, customs checks - all this was carried out according to the highest requirements of the time. The station buildings were connected by underground tunnels, which were discovered and excavated in 2002.
In the days of the Russian Empire, the Kybarti railway station was the largest after the St. Petersburg railway station. On one side of the station there were Russian-gauge railway tracks, on the other - European-gauge tracks. At the Kybarti railway station, passengers used to transfer from a European standard train to a Russian standard train, and after installing wheel changing devices here, they waited (about two hours) to change the wheels of the wagons. The Russian emperor's personal train of European standard was constantly parked in the depot of the Kybarta railway station, and when he left for Europe, his personal train of Russian standard stayed here.
