Ep. 8: The Saddle which I call Lower Nut
For violinists and viola players the closest part, for cellists and doublebassists one of the most distant parts of their instrument.
The lower saddle.
This apparently somehow round shaped tiny ebony piece at the lower part of the top, just where the tailpiece gut crosses the edge of the top from the end Botton to the tailpiece.
It doesn’t create the sound of your instrument, but despite of that, I believe that also this part has to be made with a clear concept and a specific shape.
Made in the right way it actually needs very little glue to stay in its ideal position and helps that your instrument sounds free, open and healthy.
If the lower nut is too low, the angle of the strings over the bridge becomes too much and this causes that the vibrations are rather captured than being invited to vibrate in all senses. Especially the movement of the vibration of the bridge, back and forward, is reduced in that case.
Makers and musicians commonly believe incorrectly that a higher bridge, a higher neck angle or a lower shaped lower nut gives more power to the sound. A big mistake!
That’s why I give also measurements in this video!
Thanks for watching 🎻
