Abstract: Drinking water for 2.65 million people living in California's Salinas and San Joaquin valleys have been contaminated by nitrates that from manure fertilizers. High nitrate levels induce cancer and reproductive disorders and can even kill infants. The problem is especially prevalent in areas of concentrated dairy farming, and affects cities including Salinas, Fresno and Bakersfield. Nitrates migrate into and pollute underground water supplies, but authorities say it is cheaper to buy drinking water for residents rather than reduce agricultural productivity in area.
