Frauenwürde, Walzer, Op. 277 - Josef Strauss (+ Sheet Music)

New videos every saturday!

Frauenwürde" (Dignity of Women) (Dignidad Femenina) by the genius Josef Strauss.
Josef Strauss composed this waltz in the last year of his life, for the law students' ball which took place on 30th january 1870 in the ballroom of the imperial palace in vienna. The composer knew full well why he dedicated a waltz entitled "Dignity of Women" to the future judges and attorneys and perfomed it for them: the status of women in the social life of the metropolis on the danube was in no way satisfactory or even ideal. As a rule, women could not dispose of their property as they saw fit. Even in noble circles they were accountable to their spouses, including as regards their personal expenses and needs. The situation for single women and widows was particularly difficult: they were excluded from numerous means of livelihood and remained at best at home, confined within their four walls. On the other hand, there was a very large of women and girls in vienna who were rightly counted among the "demi-mode" (group of people who live hedonistic lifestyles). Many lived as concubines; indeed, many girls were raised by their parents to be escorts and companions. In addition, when it came to "base pleasure" an ever-increasing supply of women and girls of all nationalities made themselves available for prostitution in the austrian monarchy.
Despite this, Josef knew with full conviction that even under these circumstances, the dignity of women was possible and not least that the law students had a duty to recognise women's rights and to ensure an appreciation of their worth. In 1870, it was still difficult for women and girls to be accepted in public life, but in the private sector, it was possible for them to keep their natural dignity. It was, however, not yet a matter of course to instruct women on their woth, and much less with the title of a waltz for the law students' ball! but Josef , whose married life with his wife caroline was a happy one up until his early and, in the carnival of 1870, already foreseeable death, nevertheless undertook to erect a musical monument to women's dignity. This makes his work, quite appart from it's high musical value, particularly interesting and precious.

I've extracted the main melody of the waltz to play it in my violin but since it's difficult to find the score publicly, i decided to share it with you. I have to mention that some parts of the waltz are in a low octave to make it easy for beginners (like me) so please enjoy it and try to play it! have fun!

Don't forget to subscribe and leave a comment, that would be helpful to improve my channel. Thank you!

PS: The score is mine, i didn't get it from any page or sheet source, I've extracted it from the main melody so you might find some errors :)
