In my new episode of Jobs Around the World, I worked at the Xwenji Salt Pans on Gozo in the Maltese islands. In Gozo, the process of making artisan salt through evaporation goes back to Phoenician and Roman times. Josephine Xuereb is a 5th generation salt-farmer continuing the family tradition of her mother Rosa’s family. Her family, culture, and lifestyle is about connecting with nature to cultivate a product that people aorund the world have been enjoying for thosuands of years. Xwejni salt is so natural that they have a total of 3 ingredients written on their tags: Sun, sea, and wind.
Natural sea salt harvesting is physically very hard, back-breaking work, but as Josephine says, it's not just a job. It's a rewarding family tradition and heritage that she hopes will continue to keep alive through her Gozoan culture.
