What's new at Adoptium?
"What’s new at Adoptium?" presented by Andrew Leonard (IBM), reviews recent updates across the Eclipse Adoptium project, focusing on build pipelines, testing, infrastructure, and supply chain security. This session is part of the main track at Open Community Experience 2026 in Brussels, Belgium.
This session covers updates to the Eclipse Adoptium build and release pipeline, which produces Eclipse Temurin distributions across multiple JDK versions, platforms, and architectures. The focus is on improving automation, scalability, and verification across the software delivery lifecycle.
Pipeline changes include decoupling architecture-specific builds and automating package publication, reducing delays caused by manual steps. Additional workflows introduce automated triaging of early access builds and improved visibility into build health through aggregated status reporting and test metrics.
Testing improvements focus on the AQAvit test framework, including automated re-runs of unstable test cases, enhanced result analysis, and integration with TCK certification workflows. GUI testing has been automated using tooling adapted from existing open source projects, reducing manual validation effort and improving release timelines.
The session also introduces reproducible build verification using SBOM data and independent third-party rebuilds. Build artefacts are verified through bit-for-bit comparison, with results encoded as signed attestations using CycloneDX formats. This enables external validation of released binaries and supports a more transparent software supply chain.
Infrastructure updates include dynamic provisioning of build agents, monitoring and alerting systems, and security tooling to detect and mitigate runtime issues. Future work explores applying AI-assisted workflows for build triaging, automation, and pipeline optimisation.
Key topics covered
- eclipse adoptium and temurin builds
- ci cd pipeline automation
- multi-architecture jdk builds
- aqavit testing framework
- tck certification workflows
- automated test reruns and analysis
- sbom generation and usage
- reproducible builds and verification
- cyclonedx attestations
- third-party build validation
- dynamic build agents and scaling
- infrastructure monitoring and security
Why this matters
Java runtime distributions are widely used across production systems. Improving build reproducibility, verification, and automation strengthens trust in binaries and reduces risk in the software supply chain.
