Chamois is a true European endemic species. It is found in the Alps, Carpathians, Apennines and in Asia Minor. Nowadays some populations of this species were significantly diminished or completely disappeared.

Carpathian chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra carpatica) lives in the Carpathian Mountains from Romania, being a relatively common subspecies.

It is found mainly in the alpine junipers, where in summer the chamois descend on the steep slopes and alpine pastures. In winter, it goes down the valley, on the upper limit of the forests. Thus, their environment varies between 800 and 2,500 meters, downhill reaching the red deer and European roe deer habitat.

Hunting is allowed only by fumbling, both male chamois and female chamois can be hunted. Trophies range from 95 to 110 CIC points, but higher trophies are often hunted!

The world record for a chamois trophy is 141.1 CIC points and comes from the Făgăraş Mountains.

Recommended Period: October 15th to November 15th.
