Pantheon, April 21st

On April 21st, at noon, sunlight passes through the oculus of the Pantheon of Hadrian (120s CE) and exactly strikes the doorway. It is an incredible event to behold as the disk of sunlight passes from left to right, resting on the doorway, perfectly, for a few brief moments.. It is one of the many special aspects of the world's best preserved Roman temple, and it is one of the most dramatic visual events preserved from Antiquity. Near the forum, Hadrian inaugurated the colossal Temple of Venus and Roma on April 21, 121 CE. One can imagine that he experienced this sunlight Pantheon event on that year!
