Black Warriors of Seminole
Enslaved people of African descent escaped from the British colony of Georgia during the 1700s into Spanish ruled Florida--many found their way to groups of indigenous people, an amalgamation of tribes, called the Seminoles who had settled in the Paynes Prairie area, now Gainesville, Alachua County Florida. The Black Seminoles became the interpreters and diplomats for the tribe as they fought for survival after the US won Florida from the British. John Amos narrates the history and descendants in Texas and Oklahoma relate their ancestors' stories. Made in partnership with WUFT, PBS affiliate Gainesville, FL. Winner: Suncoast Emmy
