A little bit of history, architecture and a quick view of the areas of the city in which they are located.
For centuries, the Spanish crown enacted progressively harsher laws restricting Muslim religious freedom and customs. The travel restrictions against Muslims lasted nearly 400 years, until 1900 but many Arabs had already been arriving in Cuba from Lebanon since the mid 1800’s.
The 1959 revolution affected millions of Cubans who had to abandon the country, much of the Arab-Cuban community was among them but recently there has been a resurgence and interest in this and other cultures on the island, which were part of the Cuban identity and cultural fabric, mostly reflected in the gastronomic and cultural worlds of Havana.
