008 Long Gray Lessons with Psychological Operations Officer: Major Chaveso Cook

Chaveso “Chevy” Cook is a native of Columbia, South Carolina. At an early age, both he and his brother were separated from their parents and eventually were adopted by their next-door neighbor, "Momma J". With guidance from "Momma J" and a young educator by the name of Mr. Kory Roberts, Chevy moved in a forward trajectory despite a tumultuous past.

Chevy graduated from the United States Military Academy in 2004. He commissioned as an Air Defense Artillery officer where he was an Avenger Platoon Leader, Battery Executive Officer, and Assistant S-3 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, during which he deployed to Iraq. Shortly thereafter he attended the U.S. John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School and branched Psychological Operations (PSYOP). Upon completion, Chevy, became a Detachment Commander in the 8th PSYOP Battalion at Fort Bragg.

Chevy was subsequently selected as the first PSYOP Officer for the Eisenhower Leadership Development Program, returning to West Point to become a Tactical Officer. He was the first officer in modern USMA history to be a teacher and Tactical Officer simultaneously. Returning to Bragg he commanded Delta Company and deployed again to Qatar, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Tajikistan, and the United Arab Emirates. Today he is a Ph.D. student at Tufts University.
