The MD 902 Explorer (often referred to as the 902XER when equipped with upgraded engines) is a twin-engine light utility helicopter renowned for its use of the patented NOTAR® (No Tail Rotor) technology. 
### Key Facts and Features 
NOTAR® System: The most distinctive feature of the MD 902 is the absence of a traditional tail rotor. Instead, it uses a variable-pitch fan inside the tail boom to force low-pressure air through slots, creating a boundary layer of airflow that produces anti-torque lift via the Coandă effect. Yaw control is supplemented by a direct jet thruster at the end of the tail boom. 
Safety & Noise Reduction: By eliminating the tail rotor, the aircraft is significantly quieter and safer for ground personnel and operations in confined areas or on offshore platforms. The airframe is designed for high crashworthiness, rated for impacts up to 30Gs at 30 feet-per-second. 
Versatility: The MD 902 is widely utilized for Emergency Medical Services (EMS), law enforcement, search and rescue, executive transport, and utility missions. Its cabin is noted for being spacious, with large sliding doors that facilitate easy loading of stretchers or passengers. 
Maintenance: The aircraft features a Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) and was designed for easier maintenance, including the ability to remove the transmission without displacing the rotor hub or blades.
