Imagination as Resistance – Aaron Young – ETHN 288

A Brief History of Black Representation in Media: From the Birth of a Nation to the Birth of a Revolution

Doing this project was a challenging and eye-opening experience. I am used to writing essays and term papers for final projects, so when I found out I had to create a video and post it on YouTube, which I had never done before, needless to say, I was nervous. However, once I got started, the creativity seemed to flow. I found myself worrying less about the technical side of the project and more about the content I was presenting. What stuck with me the most this semester was the history of how Blackness was represented in media and how it has evolved over the last 100-plus years. While creating this project, I reflected on my own experiences watching Black representation in media. I found that applying what I learned this semester, while acknowledging my overall limited understanding of the Black experience, gave me a profound respect and appreciation for Black artists, leaders, and revolutionaries who found the courage to represent themselves through media outlets unapologetically and truthfully when no one else would.
