State Secretary Opens Greenest Bicycle Parking Facility in the Netherlands

By planting spring flowers in a vertical garden, State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven of Infrastructure and Water Management officially opened the new bicycle parking facility under Zwolle's Stationsplein on Monday, March 8, 2021. The underground parking facility can accommodate no less than 5,800 bicycles. According to Van Veldhoven, with this innovative bicycle parking facility Zwolle is ready for the future. The extra bicycle parking spaces are necessary for the increasing number of travellers to and from Zwolle. For the station in Zwolle is an important place in the public transport network in the Netherlands. Every hour trains depart from Zwolle in eight directions. The green garden symbolizes the green character of the Bicycle Parking Stationsplein. The bicycle shed not only provides space for 5,800 bicycles, but will also be able to absorb heavy rainfall in the future. Together with the square, the parking facility will be a super-sponge for the city.
