Our Common Wall Soundproofing Upgrade | DIY And On A Budget ($300!)

Wall upgrades such as soundproofing and increasing fire rating can be expensive, especially in an old multi-unit home with lath and plaster walls. We are renovating a rental apartment with a common wall shared with cigarette smoking tenants. You can hear everything and smell cigarette odor through these old lathe and plaster walls. To upgrade both units we DIY soundproofed the common lath and plaster wall in 4 steps by removing the lath and plaster during the kitchen renovation and installing fiberglass insulation between the existing studs. Then we maximized the soundproofing, fire rating and cigarette odor barrier effect in this kitchen renovation with a double layer of 5/8” fire-rated Type X drywall. We used cost effective materials and the entire DIY project cost us $274.
